The inside of the bowl is left unglazed so that the slightly rough texture of the stoneware clay makes it easy to whip up lather. The recessed bottom is to hold a disc of soap or to melt bar soap into it. And, it make the bowl easy to grip. (The last picture is a different bowl.)
It was fired to 2300 degrees for strength and durability.

Food safe and okay in the dishwasher. Also safe in the microwave in case you want to melt shaving soap into the recessed cup in the bottom of the bowl.
